Fish Oil and Omega-3 Fats

Written By: Rebecca on March 15, 2009 One Comment

fishAnimal-based omega-3 fats, which come largely from fish and fish oils, are not eaten in abundance in the United States. What IS eaten in abundance are omega-6 fats, which come from refined vegetable oils like corn, soy, and canola.  Refined oils and refined foods are not natural to the human diet.

The typical Western ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fats is 20:1. To reach optimal health, the ratio should be closer to 1:1.

When omega-6 fats predominate in your diet, it encourages the production of inflammation in your body. Many scientists believe that one major reason for today’s high incidence of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, premature aging, and some forms of cancer is this profound imbalance between your intake of omega-6 and omega-3 fats.

Fats from grain-fed animals, hydrogenated fats and refined oils (the predominant fats in the American diet) all contribute to inflammation.

Fats from grass-fed animals,wild-caught fish, and raw coconut oil are healing and nutritious.

Increasing our intake of omega 3 fatty acids may reduce the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. This may help reduce the risk for inflammatory diseases, including heart disease and inflammatory bowel diseases. You can also increase your dietary intake of fresh fish. The main concern from eating too much fish is you may increase your risk for exposure to mercury, PCB’s, dioxins and other contaminants that may be found in fresh fish. Using a pharmaceutical-grade fish oil may reduce your risk for these contaminants as these oils are specially-manufactured to reduce the levels of PCB’s, mercury and other contaminants.
