Bilberries, sometimes called European blueberries or whortleberries, are the fruits of a shrub commonly found in Great Britain, Europe and some Asian countries. Bilberries are in fact related to the wild blueberries and huckleberries found in North America, and a few varieties of bilberries grow in some western states.

Bilberries contain concentrated quantities of a flavonoid known as anthocyanin. This potent antioxidant is known to shield blood vessels from damage caused by fats and calcium that circulate in the blood. 5) Fish oils improve survival of cancer patients - Professor Hans Krokan at the research laboratory UNIGEN in Trondheim, Norway, has shown that the so-called Omega 3 fatty acids (EFA) kills certain types of cancer cells. He received 14 major awards and honors and was given an honorary Doctorate by the University of Heidelberg for his work. A group of Denmark researchers recently conducted a meta-analysis of three randomized, placebo-controlled trials that tested rosehip extracts on osteoarthritis patients.

Flavonoid-rich rosehip extracts from the dog rose have been shown to have an anti- inflammatory effect that relieves osteoarthritis pain.

Hyben-Vital International – a company that produces rosehip extracts – sponsored all three of these studies. But according to the meta-analysis authors, these are so far the only placebo-controlled studies that have observed the effects of rosehip on osteoarthritis.

Nearly 300 subjects with osteoarthritis participated in the three studies, and the trial periods ran an average of three months. The Denmark team determined that subjects who received rosehip extracts reduced their pain scores by nearly 40 percent on average compared to placebo.

Recently, federal prosecutors charged a New York generic drug manufacturer and its’ subsidiary with making illegal payoffs to a former Food and Drug Administration official.

Prosecutors said Par Pharmaceutical Inc. of Spring Valley, N.Y., and Quad Pharmaceuticals Inc., a Par subsidiary in Indianapolis, Ind., were each charged with a single count of giving an illegal gratuity. Each company faces a maximum fine of $500,000.

Also, a former senior vice president of Par, Ashok Patel, pleaded guilty to a similar bribery charge. Mr. Patel, who resigned from Par in April, faces a possible two years in prison and a $250,000 fine, prosecutors said.

The charges are the latest developments in a yearlong investigation of payoffs in the F.D.A.’s generic drugs division.

Court filings say Mr. Patel gave Charles Chang, an F.D.A. chemist, about $2,900 in cash on six occasions from July 1987 to April 1988, when Mr. Chang and chemists he supervised were reviewing Par applications for drug approvals.

Dilip Shah, the former Quad president, also made payoffs to Mr. Chang, court documents say. Mr. Shah resigned from the company Friday.

A generic drug firm admitted in federal court that it paid thousands of dollars to federal regulators to speed new drug approvals ahead of its competitors and altered documents subpoenaed by a congressional committee investigating the scandal.

In the latest round of guilty pleas in the continuing fraud and bribery probe of the lucrative generic drug industry, American Therapeutics Inc., of Bohemia, N.Y., acknowledged violating interstate racketeering laws. It faces up to $500,000 in fines.
